Seriously, I've played far too many games that offered '40-50 hours of game time' but only 4-5 hours of that was actual fun. I'd much rather have a shorter game without the time-sinks inserted to make it seem longer.
Hey ho here we go again...................................
Piracy Is to Blame.... With out a shaddow of doubt...
Any one who says anything else is in denial.....
or a pirate that has means to this breakdown...
No, that is what the publishers WANT you to think though. Yes, piracy is a problem. Yes, publishers weigh that in the mix on deciding where to put there cash. BUT, it is NOT the whole problem... not by a long shot.
Why do you think that there has not been many Hollywood blockbusters like there used to be....people downloading them
PIRACY
wrong again, there are multiple reasons... rising ticket prices, ease of rental for your nice new home theater... and the biggest: hollywood making crap movies that are either lame rush-jobs, lame remakes, lame sequels or a combination of the three. Yet even with that they still set record sales numbers and turn large profits... piracy is there, sure... but it is not a huge industry killer like the media says it is... it is NOT the cause, perhaps it is the result of what I mentioned above? I am not condoning it, just observing. I own (read: purchased legally) more than 400 dvd's and would label myself a movie-buff so I follow alot of the market there.
So was blueray... again, you are wrong. Blueray won b/c Sony (rightfully so) did not want a repeat of vhs/betamax so it threw a ton of cash behind the scenes (again, smart) to ensure most studios stayed with them. Once HDdvd had no studios but 1 it was a foregone result.
So consoles are a clear winner from a publishers point of view....
Yes pcs are more flexible, yes pcs are better machines, yes pcs have better games bla bla bla ... But consoles games are more frequent.
Now here, you are partly right. From a publishers view the console is better... but more from a trackable market aspect rather than a true "better" market. They can see and follow where their sales/money goes. They see a "captive" market that is now "forced" to buy their games b/c you can do nothing else with that console. A PC owner is not a game player... a console owner is.
As for more frequent... there are more games on the console yes, but most of them are not worth your money. See the above info on crap movies for a mirror of that.
Games consoles came out with HD first - on a 1080i / p monitor
As already pointed out, "HD" is just a marketing term... the tech that makes it up has been on PC since before you were probably born. Even 10 years ago I had a 21" crt running at 1600x1200 and above... which at a raw pixel count is right in between your 1080 and 720 p display.
Games for windows has been a disaster, its since Vista came out and the Xbox 360 had decent games only just really comming out last year...
That is just a name, and in no way does it mean that all PC games must have it... from a marketing stand, ya... prb fail. But not all great pc games this last year had that tag either so it is a moot point.
Go on name 10 Games for Windows Games, i bet you cant with out looking it up
now name 10 Xbox 360 games
So what if you have to look it up? and you really should not name any 10 games, but 10 GOOD games... that is just as hard on the 360 IMO... even harder if you drop the cross platform ones. But 10 GOOD games (consistent GOOD reviews) is tricky on ANY platform... just there is less crap to sift through on the PC
It seems that the trend is, games are not being given to the oldest gaming platform ever... the pc....
You look in the shops, pc games magazines .... its 3-4 page spreads for a 75% game which is a addon pack....where before it was only 1 page.................and pc games tend to be the same ones week after week except those poxy SIM 2 Expansion packs for girls....
Wrong. "pc games magazines"? If you are talking about the likes of "game informer" or something else in GameStop... those have not been "pc games magazines" since the millenium. The only true pc games mag in a store like that is PC Gamer... and I have yet to see them give a full spread ANYTHING for a game like the SIMS... If you look through a mag like that you can see plenty of reviews for releases that are good and bad, but that means there are enough releases to keep them working...
Seems like MickySoft is the biggest part of the problem. Pushing Vista, Dx10 and XBox down everyones throat.
PC games are now mostly ports, and really bad ports at that.
Another serious problem is the hacking and cheating. A couple of hacker websites are now making money on their product.
Only multiplayer games I still play are CoD2, CoD4. Their hacked up but at least they work.
I broke down and got Bioshock. It's very different and a lot of fun, but there is no multiplayer game mode.
What games do you still play?
Is there any hope?
I think what he is getting at is the fact that most companies are abondoning the PC platform and going to consoles. I remember when it was the thing to have was a high speed low drag PC. It seems that most companies have forgot where its at, PC's are where its at. I love my computer
AMD Athlon 64 3400 2.4Ghz
2GB PC 3200
430w PS
512mb ATI X1300 AGP interface
Windows XP
I want to have the excitement back to where you don't know how to spend your money because there are so many games to choose from. Now its more like, I have more money than there is games to spend it on. Does anyone understand where I am coming from on this??
Oh by the way, I play COD4 and WOW. Nothing else out there that really gets my attention. Anyone got any suggestions?
Anyone play Frontlines: Fuel of War, or Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. How are they?
Seriously, I've played far too many games that offered '40-50 hours of game time' but only 4-5 hours of that was actual fun. I'd much rather have a shorter game without the time-sinks inserted to make it seem longer.
I don't advocate poor game play either, but if developers spent half as much time on gameplay and levels as the developers do on graphics the quality of games would drastically increase.
Funny how the best games are those where people don't have a life because they enjoy the game so much.
anyone play Frontlines: Fuel of War, or Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. How are they?
I don't know about Turning Point but everything I have read about Frontlines seems to make it out to be boring.
I don't really know because I haven't played either....
Edit: Tom's games has a review on Turning point.

The evening news is where they begin with 'Good evening', and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

Do you know what I sat and read your rumblings... And come to a conclusion
Your a disolusioned fool, and to be honest, I just cant even be bothered to write a reply longer than 20 words whilst watching you ramble on.....
Step on....
mmmm Holywood block busters
When will the americans start to right good scripts again,, 80% of films came out of the last couple of years are utter crap...
Few good films out but most are as dire as listening to an evangelist going on about peoples sins, when he has his end away with hundreds of women.
It started of that Blueray was a tougher cookie to crack , then got more support as it was not cracked as early as HD DVD..
HD DVD got cracked almost as soon as it came out........
Consoles, mmm ps3 has only just been hacked, Xbox and wii have but its more difficult to pirate for....
HD DVD lost the format war so you can justifiably sit there grinning with your Ploystation 3...
Happy days...
IMHO DVD still has life yet, especially when its upscalled to 1080i anyway...
Blueray wont catch on as much as on demand films when they get going...
Not all game manufacturers colapse on piracy alone but its a reason that some stay away from developing new games. And another reason that **** studios goes bust...
As for the magazine comments , talking completely bs there ... are u in the uk reading pc gamer or pc zone... No thought not...
Round of small burger and fries to me...
Oh and im so glad that im partly right on one artical, infact i got my self bratz - special edition on my Nintendo DS for that great Achievment...
I feel superior now knowing i cant pretend to dance with bikini top on to crap music
^ far cry was ported... but it sucked there and was a shadow of its former PC-self.
rumors abound on crysis making the jump as well. The dev for vampire is dead (pun!) so there was not much hope there anyway... but all good pc games for sure.

"Hey, I'm a reasonable guy, but I've just experienced some very unreasonable things" - Jack Burton
Maybe the game makers are going hollywood. I mean, think of it, theyll pump out anything to make a buck. If they abandon fans along the way, theyll have an excuse. Hollywood writes movies about 2 things, or are centered around 2 things, or somehow its incorporated (pun intended) into the movie. One is, theres the evile corporation, out to do harm against poe lil us. The other of course is the evile government, out to do evile against poe lil, not knowing innocent us. So whered the creativity go? I think its 2 things. One is obvious, greed. The other? Ideology. Yep, if you you dont think along those lines, its hard to find work in ol tinsel town, let alone write a movie. I think gaming and hollywood is a great analogy, since the gaming machine has an attitude that reflects hollowoods throw anything at em, and lots of it too, to make the most money we can. And heres another thing. Id like to see what the profits are for spending the same amount of money on a console game vs a PC game. Period. Lets make it so its a game thats very hard to steal. Im betting thats its the console game FTW . They know their audience, and have em wrapped up, just like hollowood. Its a much freer environment on the PC. Dont have to buy the console, which game makers go to high degrees to protect their investments, the console, whether its Sony, MS or whomever. Wheres that kind of endorsement coming from the PC? M$ doesnt need to do it, cause theyve already sold you their OS. Theres lots of things that influence this market, the problem is for PC gaming is, we dont have enough influence

Same problem as games: in Hollywood today, graphics take precedence over story... so the plot makes no sense, the director thinks he's still making music videos with a cut every three frames, and the actors can't act, but throw in a few CG explosions and you can call it done.

it has been a trend, each year the games look better but the game play gets worst.
the reason why these companies are having trouble is because of the jerks running them,
you have a 1 in a billion chance at getting a job as a director or a writer for a movie. the people who make movies don't listen to the people so there no fresh ideas coming in for movies
same with games. submit any kind of story to them and i bet it heads right into their trash can or some idiot sales person looks at it and gives some kind of copy paste response like
we are glad that you are interested in our game. then they proceed to advertise crap to you
game companies are close minded to the people so nothing new comes in so they milk old ideas to hell and get angry when people stop buying their crap
it doesnt matter if you change 1 thing in a story, if it is not a fresh idea, it just feels like your buying the same game again with just a few changes
most games now feel like your just playing a few extra levels to the game and not a new game
compare movies from a long time ago and now. which movies seem more memorable to you.
most movies these days, they can get popular for a fre weeks then everyone forgets about them, no really really remembers them because the story in them sucks and nothing significant happens in them, just crappy acting and and a oversized CG team
i don't need the best graphics in the world. i like games to look good but theres no need to go overboard with the graphics because then people cant run it and the gameplay goes to hell
no matter how good a game looks, the wow effect will only last a few minutes then it is on to gameplay
if you were to bring a PS3 back to the 1980's people will say the graphics are really good and be amazed by it for about a few minutes or a day or 2 then hate it because the gameplay is repetitive and boring and uncreative
Wow, what a pessimistic view. If you honestly think games are getting crappier and crappier then either you have not been paying attention recently or you just have no taste in good games.
Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Puzzle Quest, Culdcept Saga, Super Mario Galaxy, Sins of a Solar Empire, Call of Duty 4, Smash Bros Brawl, Twilight Princess, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Witcher, Company of Heroes, and tons more great games have come out in the last couple of years.
A large number of those games are hugely innovative, while others are merely fine tunes and refinements on saturated genres. Many of these games are good enough to beat out the vast majority of older games. There is a decent smattering of PC and console titles and for the most part, the cross platform titles performed well on all platforms.
It has been said that 90+% of everything is crap. If you focus on that 90 or so percent then you will miss the 10 percent that are truly good and the 1% that are truly phenomenal. The last year and a half of games have been some of the best in my lifetime. There are a handful of older titles that I will still go back and play years and years after the fact, but for the most part games get ignored after the first couple of years they have been out.
I do agree that the focus has been too intent on graphics of late, but I would certainly not agree that there has been a downward trend on game quality.
what? Of course 17" monitors support 1920x1080, my laptop has a 17" screen and a native resolution of 1920x1200, even higher, and I bought that in 2006. Its now 2008 I'm sure you can buy 17" monitors at 1920x180 and above.
Still I recently got a 24" screen late last year running at 1920x1200 and games like COD4 look awesome on it.
I agree with every body about piracy having a impact on PC gaming, with developers having to waste time putting more effort into copy protection, which gets cracked anyway and makes it more of a pain for people who actually purchase a genuine copy.
The only 17" displays I've seen with a resolution that high were on top end Alienware laptops. So sure, your $4000 notebook has that, but no one sells retail displays that small with a resolution that high.

What he thinks, and what he actually gets is another thing...
Remember the Apple case on how many colours were on the screen.

I had an old 17" NEC CRT that did 1280 easily and if you pushed it to 1600, it would do it, but it would be fuzzy. And that was probably around 10 years ago....
