Bedminster (NJ) - Customers of AT&T's broadband Internet service will soon have free access to the company's Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country.

The telecommunications giant announced this week that it will be extending its free Wi-Fi program to customers who subscribe to its broadband service of 1.5 Mbps or higher. It currently offers it to top-end broadband customers only.

Additionally, AT&T will improve its service to allow for connections of 10 Mbps. AT&T operates more than 10,000 hotspots in the US, including bookstores, coffee shops, McDonald's, and airports.

AT&T has been pushing to expand its role in the telecommunications industry. In addition to offering broadband Internet, the landline service staple now offers cable TV. It also acquired mobile service provider Cingular in 2006.
