Las Vegas (NV) - HP announced at CES today that it will immediately begin offering wireless WAN capable mobile computers, beginning with the HP Compaq nc6140.

The nc6140 uses Verizon Wireless' Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) network, which features download speeds of 400 to 700 kbps. This is significantly faster than the competing WWAN service, EDGE, offered by Cingular. Typically EDGE provides data rates between 75 and 135 kbps and peek rates of 170 kbps.

"Mobile professionals using HP's mobile broadband notebook no longer have to limit themselves to airports, hotel lobbies or other public Wi-Fi hotspots," said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Computing, HP. "Our customers can now enjoy extremely fast data connectivity speeds, enabling them to communicate better and be more productive wherever they happen to be."

According to HP the Compaq nc6140 is available now. However, this morning, the notebook could not be found on HP's shopping site.
