Crytek: Crysis 2 Will Have Best Game AI Ever

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Virtual enemies will be "thinking, fair" foes when they blast off your head.

In a recent interview, Crytek boss Cervat Yerli promised that AI in the upcoming game Crysis 2 will be the best, most sophisticated seen in video game history. Although we've heard this plenty of times before from developers in the past, Yerli said that players will have "thinking," fair" foes. We'll believe it when we see it.

"We have the most advanced AI system in a game," Yerli said. "We think that Crysis 2 has the most advanced AI for both humans and aliens you've ever seen. They will be showing tactical co-ordination, they will be more challenging but not unfair--they will be truly intelligent, thinking, fair enemies."

He also indicated that gamers will enter a new realm of gameplay thanks to the almost-Skynet-like artificial decision making.

"I think from that perspective our gameplay experience will be very unique because on one hand you have a world that allows freedom, on the second hand a hero that allows freedom--but also an enemy that adapts to freedom and provides you constant challenge no matter what you do," he said.

Crysis 2 certainly "wowed" us back at E3 2010. Sounds like the game will truly blow our socks off when it hits stores this holiday season.

... so Crysis is the cause of skynet?

Does it also apply to friendly AIs?

Sounds good. I presume AI 'make' dynamic decisions, constantly reassessing their situation with elements of randomness. One of my favourite AIs is still the original FEAR. You think you have the upper hand sneaking around them, but sometimes they take a different route and even change their strategies when you reload from a save. Not something you can sit back and plough your way through.

What are the requirements going to be for this game?

It's about time someone made aliens think like aliens are supposed to.

"We'll believe it when we see it."

I agree on that statement.

I remember FarCry2's promisses about the AI and gameplay acheivements... felt pretty unfinished to me with the lack of story lack of proper ending and none stop identical gameplay that gets boring real fast.

Then again, this isn't FarCry2, I hope they do a good job.

We have all been here before. As soon as a developer starts making statements about how advanced and outstanding their new game is, we can all pretty much assume that everything will be a massive let down. I am predicting disappointing graphics for the PC, free spawning and predictable enemies and an overall feeling of 'Meh'.

i think it means that they wont handicap the player by decreasing their HP when you increase the difficult

to make the AI seem more real, it should fight dirty, not fair. I know I'm going to fight dirty...:)

Unfair is when you snipe a guard from 600 yards and the guy standing next to him fires his pistol from the hip drilling you right between the eyes with his first shot :)

well, will the enemies still be able to see and shoot you from a mile+ away (thinking about the boats with guns from the first one)

well if time travel exists in the future we will know soon enough cuz someone will be coming back to destroy crysis 2 to stop future war...maybe they can give us cheap tech that can run crysis as well...

Well, the AI in Crysis was good, so I have high expectations from this one. But I hope that they introduce a 5th difficulty level which is one notch up the Delta level of the first game.

smart AI's means quicker to die and harder to kill, so I may cheat sooner than later depending on my level of frustration.

Fair as in the ai doesnt know where you are if it doesnt have a visual contact with the enemy. I think it was in the first half life where even if you teleported yoirself away from the enemy, the ai wouldnstill know where the hell you are.

Agreed, FEAR had good AI.

I also agree on the definition of fair. If the enemy can't see you, they shouldn't know where you are (unless its based on noise). If they did see you, then lost sight of you, they shouldn't be able to follow you behind a wall, down a hallway, and through another corridor to where you pop-out next.

And agreed on the omniscient helicopters. Nothing kills a game better than the mandatory "shoot down the fast-moving, infinite-ammo carrying helicopter" level. But damn if it ain't a pre-requisite for almost every FPS game out there. I think I got at least 10 games installed on my computer with an omniscient helicopter level.

That's not saying much. There is no component further behind than AI. Graphics have always been at the forefront. Physics has been the recent obsession of game makers. AI and sound are fighting for last place.

Granted every FPS game needs better enemy AI, I believe they should spend just as much effort in improving the physics of weapons. When the first Crysis came out, not only did they tout how good it looked, but also how great objects in the game obeyed the laws of physics.

They should be able to allow a toggle in the settings to apply the same physics to weapons. An arch/range/lethal velocity to my rounds would be greatly appreciated. Adding in environment variables would be great too.

I think adding weapon physics to the improved AI would do wonders for this game. It just seems a moot point if the AI was made smarter, but my pistol could still shoot in a straight line with a range as far as my GPU could draw an image on my monitor. Lets put those extra CPU cores to good use!

Hmm...I hope its as "good" as their first game's AI, with guys walking past me to jump on a machine gun turret when I'm already behind the bunker. It was real good stuff.

One thing that always bugged me about crysis was the enemies accuracy and their hit points. Hitting a guy without any body armor on with the same gun they have at point blank range should do MORE damage to him than it does to me when he shoots me. I could see if I was fighting a bunch of guys with nanosuits on but these are the plucky regulars Im talking about.. some dude in a boonie hat and tshirt should die if I put 2 in his chest not stagger back and shrug it off and shoot me with the same rifle and in 2 or 3 hits Im out of armor. Then there's the accuracy that they have ... A shotgun should not strip my armor from 50 yards away... an ak round shouldnt be able to even hit me from 500yds away.
