The DVD Forum announced a new specification for the DVD RAM at its most recent European verification seminar, which was held on March 29 in Reutte, Austria. According to an article published at Heise online, the new disc will rated for speeds from 6x to 16x. Rotation speeds range from 9738 rpm when data is written to the inner area of the disc and increases to 11,000 rpm in the outer area.

The upcoming DVD-RAM discs are not compatible to drives supporting slower speeds and therefore will receive the label "Class 1". DVD-RAMS supporting 2x to 5x are designated "Class 0". The term Class 1 will also be used for 8x and 12x speeds, according to the article. (THG)
