Good news! Valve has confirmed that DotA 2 will be free-to-play forever...
In between Max Payne 3 and Diablo III, your wallet’s probably been hurting from the sheer amount that you’ve spent on games. If that’s the case, you should keep DotA 2 on your watch list. Valve’s confirmed that DotA 2 will be free-to-play at launch and has launched the DotA store in preparation for the game’s release.
Valve’s promised that the game won’t be pay-to-win. Rather, it will follow in the footsteps of Team Fortress 2 in selling vanity items. Valve also hopes that players will sell their own crafted items.
For now, be prepared for an influx of hat jokes for DotA 2.

Anyway, DoTA is going to be great. I've never played it but I've watched it.
DotA 2 is no longer an acronym as it is the real official name for the game steam is making...
However it is the 'sequel' to the original DOTA which did stand for 'Defense of the Ancients'.
I'll stick with LoL
