Firefox Hits One Billion Downloads

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Mozilla has announced that the company's Firefox browser has reached a milestone of one billion downloads.

Late last week the company announced its onebillionplusyou site to celebrate the fact that, in the five years since it launched firefox 1.0, the Mozilla community has downloaded Firefox a huge one billion times.

Designed to celebrate what Mozilla has done so far, the site also includes a few nifty facts about the number one billion. For example, did you know that one billion credit cards equal the weight of fifty two blue whales? Or that a bowl big enough to house one billion goldfish would need to be the size of a stadium?

Funny facts aside, it's a huge achievement, no matter what kind of numbers the competition can lay claim to (IE8 has achieved 200 million downloads in the last four months alone). How many of you can say you are a part of the mozilla community? Let us know in the comments below!

The IE8 number really should not count, since it is an automatic windows update for Vista. Most people don't even check what updates are happening

I am apart of that 1 billion :D but you gotta realize that 1 billion downloads does not equal 1 billion people. I've probably downloaded it 4 times on different computers. That aside, it's a great achievement.

I have downloaded firefox at least 10 times this year for various reasons. I might have even grabbed it more than 30 times this year for all I know, hard to keep track.

Is M$ including every windows computer sold in the last month? Every update? Every add-on? Its hard to believe there are still 200million people who have IE and know what a browser is and/or how to download.

Yup I love firefox, way better and faster than IE. But I'm liking google chrome alot and once you can stream netflix using chrome ill prolly switch that to my default browser. Firefox has been gettin a lil slower as of late and honestly i think chrome is doing tabbed browsing better

I still use firefox as a backup "stable" browser... but Google Chrome is just faster (although buggy on occasion).

Firefox 3.5 is noticeably faster than previous 3.x versions (for me, at least). I have been a Firefox supporter since it's first beta release (and used the original Mozilla browser before that).

I bounce between Chrome and Firefox. Chrome is faster, but Firefox is more stable with less bugs and far more customization. Go Mozilla!

I wonder if they count each time FF has been downloaded for updates as well?
I personally hate MS IE crap and don't use it or Google ads.

I have downloaded Firefox a few times, but never installed it. Just want to have the install file incase I need it for someone else's computer.

It should also be noted that I'm sure they count dl for ever version meaning they count the dl of all firefox versions meaning the same people multiple times well over :p Really all it shows is how firefox you have to download new versions instead of patches. I'm sure IE has several billion dl's if you count ever patch.

How nice for TH/BoM to remind us of m$'s "achievements" in every news article... Funny, it's almost never the other way around - nothing about competition, if the article is for praising m$.
You surely missed to squeeze in some $even (vi$hta sp2+) "news" on this one... but that's on tuanny and yummy boy's turf.

I've downloaded it like 10 times or more now. -_-
(reformatting, updating from 1.0 to 2.0, then 2.0 to 3.0 etc.)

I probably download it at least 20 times a month. If a customer does not already have Firefox on their computer I put it on.
