Gateway issued a "voluntary" recall of about 35,000 batteries included with notebooks that were shipped through the firm's direct, professional and retail channels. According to the company, the batteries affected were built by Sony and can overheat and create a "potential" fire hazard.

Gateway is only the latest notebook manufacturer that has been forced to recall the batteries: In recent weeks, Dell, Apple, Toshiba, Lenovo, IBM, Fujitsu and Hitachi have recalled more than 7.5 million notebooks. Sony estimates that the tally will end up at a total of 9.6 million recalled batteries, which will cost the company about $430 million.

Gateway said that the affected batteries were offered as the primary or spare battery with the models CX200, CX210, E100M, M250, M255, M280, M285, M465, M685, MP8708, NX260, NX510, NX560, NX860, NX100, MX1025, MX6918b and MX1020j.
