12:11 PM - June 10, 2009 by Jane McEntegart

Most of us have used Internet Explorer at some point in our computing lives. Even if it was just to download Firefox. However, the browser has come a long way and Internet Explorer today is a completely different browser that the one Microsoft first offered in the mid-nineties. With that in mind, have you tried the latest version? Because that’s really all you need to do to win.

Just to be clear, you don’t have to be an Internet Explorer 8 user to enter or win, but you do have to give it a shot. Visit the contest page by clicking here and the rest easy. We’d advice interested parties to get their entries in quick. The contest is only open to 10,000 people and will operate on a first come, first served basis.

So what are you waiting for? CLICK HERE to enter!

Not into contests? Here are links to all the other major browsers available for download:

The fine print:

As with all contests, there are rules: The Giveaway is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and District of Columbia ("U.S.") who are 18 years of age or older as of date of entry, possess a valid U.S. driver’s license, and can provide proof of legal residency ("Entrant"). The closing date for entries is 11:59 PM Eastern Time on June 30th, 2009. Only ONE entry per person will be considered a valid entry. For a full list of contest rules, we encourage you to click HERE.

I'm suprised we haven't gotten a "must not be any news to report today" comment.

Wow! I was so excited until I read that I had to use IE8. Keep the money - it's far too little to compensate me for the headaches and heartaches.

Great contest! But, hmm... Why is there no confirmation at the end? Just click the DL link at the end and that's it? Nothing that says, "Thanks for entering!" or "You've been entered into the contest!" or anything like that? Odd... Oh well. I hope I'm in...

Ditto.

But seriously, why make me download IE8 to enter the contest if I'm already using IE8?

Sounds like Microsoft paid the site to host this "contest" involving downloading IE8, in an attempt to increase IE marketshare even further.

Seriously?

Maybe you haven't been paying attention the last two years. This place sold out long before this.

Wow, Tom's is hosting a way to possibly win a $400 newegg gift card or a netbook and your complaining because all you have to do is use IE8 for a few minutes, or until it crashes I suppose.

Tom's didn't sell out, if they did they would be endorsing IE8 not giving you a link to a contest.

in fact, the whole contest targetted by the link you talk about is hosted on tomshardware.com ... does that ring a bell?

What with all the FUD about IE8? I've been using it for 5 months now without a single crash, slowdown, or problem. It's more stable than any other browser I've used, and it's more standards compliant any any previous version. Do you guys have spyware installed, or are you running some heavy-handed "internet security" suite? Maybe you should download Spybot S&D and do a scan.

Full disclosure: I don't work for Microsoft, and am not affiliated in any way with MS. I'm not a brand-loyal person... I use both Intel and AMD, I liked Blu-ray and HD-DVD. I use Visual Studio, and I use open-office. I just use what works for me. seboj thinks this is a binary argument, either all-in or all-out. Can't one just like a certain technology because it works, not because it is affiliated with some company or internet religious movement? (P.S. I previously submitted my comment under myker, and just signed up as a member, mykem)
