At the recently concluded FPD Taiwan 2006, major Taiwan-based panel makers including Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT), AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) were demonstrating how changing the composition of liquid crystals (LC) in their notebook panels can help overcome the tradeoff between response time and power consumption. Although most people think of liquid crystals as a standard component, almost all LCDs use a mixture of liquid crystal materials, with up to 10-20 materials being mixed to optimize certain display properties such as voltage threshold, switching times or polarity, industry sources explained.
