Nvidia 3D Vision Surround: 3 Monitors With 3D
If 3D gaming on one monitor isn't enough for you, maybe three will suffice.
Nvidia came out in force today, unveiling the next generation of Tegra as well as bolstering its presence in the 3D marketplace. This concerns the latter.
I stopped by the Nvidia booth earlier today to catch up on the latest and greatest in 3D tech. The press conference earlier today covered most of the bases, but the 3D Vision Surround demo beckoned. 3D Vision Surround takes the existing 3D Vision concept/hardware and triples it. In other words, you're playing a PC title, in 3D, over three different screens.
The hardware needed inside your gaming machine isn't as simplified as AMD and the Radeon 5000 series cards that can power three displays on one card. The Surround setup requires two Nvidia cards in SLI; The demo on the show floor was running two "Next Generation" GF100 GPUs. One GPU powers the left and center displays, and the other powers the right display. In this case, the displays weren't monitors, rather three 120 Hz DLP projectors pointed at one very long screen. If you happen to have three 120 Hz monitors lying around, you should be good to go.
There's no word on pricing and specific GPU compatibility just yet (I was told it will work with most Nvidia GPUs), and the launch time frame is within the next three months.

Wait, what? That's right everyone, you don't need a big TV, you just need to sit closer.
I, uh, don't think anyone is going to about needing another graphics card when they've sunk thousands into multi-projector 3D system.
Yes Simplified.. what's wrong about that?? If AMD can run 3 displays in one card, then what's the advantage in Nvidia's new "idea"? who has 3 projectors in his home anyway??!!
or at least come out with an amazing cheap powerful gpu ala the 8800 that took headlines for months and still tops sales by chip (G92). that's revolutionary, that's newsworth.
I tried some games using 3 monitors and my ATI card...it was nice... but a huge performance hit.
1080p 120Hz projectors are not cheap.
Calibrating them together is not easy.
So, why not just give as an affordable 120Hz 7680x1600 (2560*3x1600) monitor, bezeless, perfectly curved, and about 50".
I'm sure it'd be cheaper than these 3 projectors...
A curved bezelless 2560x3x1600 monitor would cost an absolute fortune!! It'd probably actually be cheaper to have six 1080p semi decent 60Hz projectors and some polarising filters.
Actually yes... I have a 3D DLP TV 61" and the optics of viewing 3d TV and games allows you to sit MUCH closer. I'm talking about 2 feet away. The same is true with DLP projectors. Go to a flight simulator enthusiast website and you'll see plenty of pics of people sitting 2 feet away. Yes you need a dedicated room. But you would also need one for this crazy & expensive sceme.
The booth in the grand lobby is running on dual GTX285s and three Acer projectors. The projectors are 720p using CRT connectors.
The three projector display in the booth is running on dual GF100s. The DepthQ projectors are 720p and use CRT too.
The third demo is running on three 1920x1080 LCD displays from Acer and Alienware using 3 dual link dvi connectors. This one is using dual GTX 285s.
Need for Speed Shift is being shown on the dual GF100s and projectors; Batman Arkham Asylum is on the LCDs and dual GTX 285s; and Avatar is running on dual GTX 285s on projectors.
Cheers,
