Nvidia: Tegra is the Future, Apple Leading Way
CNet today reports that earlier this week at the company’s analyst day, Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jen-Hsun Huang told attendees that GPGPUs are the future.
Huang went on to finger Apple as a trendsetter because of the company’s support for OpenCL and the importance the company’s laptops place on the GPU.
The news comes shortly after reports that the company has bagged its first big Tegra contract in the form of Microsoft’s latest itteration of the Zune, the Zune HD. Huang also told audience members that in a few years, Tegra could represent half of its business, with the rest divided up between the professional (Tesla and Quadro products) and the consumer GeForce markets.
Nvidia’s Tegra chipset is aimed at both laptops and mobile devices. While this year’s Computex saw plenty of Tegra-based laptops (as well as laptops based on Nvidia’s Ion chipset), we’re still waiting for a cellphone packing Tegra. We'll admit it's quite a leap but from the way Huang was praising Apple, does anybody think there's even a small chance the next iteration of the iPhone could be based on the Tegra chipset? Let us know in the comments below!

Friggin Apple fanboi...
Also with OPENCL being an open standard does it really matter? Nvidia and AMD/ATI will be supporting it.
Great. After years of working hard to forget the blatant failure the Nokia N-Gage was, other companies just keep on trying to pry the concept out of the icy grips of death and improve upon it. Is this really necessary? I know MOST iPhone/Mac users aren't gamers, and will probably only end up watching their overpriced TV episodes and movies from iTunes on them, so seriously, what is Nvidia thinking they can do by supporting Apple like this?
If that is so, hopefully they'll add an HDMI 1.4 port. That would be cool. I would own an iphone then.
that won't happen since apple has a device that does media output to tv. i don't remember the name but it's prolly something like iSuck...
Might want to fix that...
I think it's more ironic that the Zune already has it. Apple may include it, and if they do, they'll play it up as if it makes them so innovative.
Unless it has a 960x540 screen, I don't really care.
That sounded VERY , very wrong.
That sounded VERY , very wrong.
Steve Jobs must be having some serious hormone issues...
Perhaps we will se an iGasm soon.
But seriously, anyone who instantly notices something like that in the sentence must watch too much porn.

so this ought to rule tegra out of the iphone picture (at least common sense tells me so)... fangirl
This could make a decent performance possible.
And this could also open the door to casual games that don't suck.
If apple could make iPhone run Mac applications (within the hardware limits) like this, they really on to something.
The same power as an X1600?
I could run a lot of casual games like Sam & Max or even Unreal Tournament on a new iPhone. (With the iPhone OS replaced by a Linux variant with wine and good, optimized drivers.)
This would make games mobile, instead of cooking up some half-baked, half-burnt crisps of mobile games.
The mobile games concept should definitely die!!
The mobile hardware should be strong enough to play casual, PC/Mac games. Only then you have a good experience, now throw in a HDMI-port and two mini-usb for a mouse and keyboard and we have ourselves a decent platform to do simple, not goo heavy games on!!!
