OLED Technology: Samsung confirms, Sony postpones

With Samsung SDI already turning out production 1.7" OLED modules, Sony has announced that for technical reasons, it won't be ready to supply the market before the end of 2004 as it had predicted.

Mastery of OLED technology is crucial for manufacturers of flat-panel displays. It opens the way to brighter, more detailed, faster, and less energy-consuming displays. Screens using the technology are naturally suited to applications in mobile electronics, though larger monitors are eventually planned.

Samsung will be producing 50,000 1.7" displays per month beginning in September, and plans to begin marketing 17" displays sometime during 2005. (source: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun)
