So close we can almost taste it.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 are on the way out. While Microsoft and Sony are reluctant to talk about their next generation consoles and insist the current generation still has a ways to go before it's dead, it's no secret that the PS4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever it'll be called) are coming. No doubt, we're all looking forward to E3 and hoping one or the other will make an appearance. However, it seems we might not have to wait that long. The latest rumors say we may see a pre-E3 announcement regarding the PS4.
Sony's vice president of home entertainment, Hiroshi Sakamoto, apparently confirmed to Spanish language site Emol that the company is planning to talk PS4 in May. When asked about the next generation of PlayStation, Sakamoto said all he could say was that the company is focused on E3 in June and that the announcement may be then or even earlier, in May.
Sony's PS4 is rumored to be based on an AMD processor, and Sakamoto hinted that the new console may also pack integrated NFC functionality, too.

they also said my delux ps3 could run linux and functioned to play ps2 games... that didn't last long either as they took away the ability with non optional fireware updates (well optional to a point but suddenly my solution was buy a new ps3 and dont' update the old one to use any otehr function on the ps3 and use the ps online community), i am done with sony, the ps3 was my last sony purchase ever

There is too much of a library and developers support for the PS3 to simply kill it off. They will easily surpass 100m units before the console is retired.
