The design of in-ear headphones that come as standard with many portable music players, can cause users to crank their music up to damaging levels, research suggests.

Two separate studies assess the loudness of different MP3 players and headphone designs. They suggest that headphones which do not screen out background noise encourage users to turn the volume up to levels that may put their hearing at risk of long term damage.
