Is Google Trying to Kill the CAPS LOCK KEY?

by - source: istartedsomething

WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE INTERNET IF SUDDENLY THERE WERE NO MORE INANE SHOUTING OF NONSENSE?

Yesterday's Chrome OS Notebook Cr-48 reveal showed that Google had different plans for where the caps lock key normally resides. INSTEAD OF DOING THIS SORT OF THING, Google has mapped to a search key.

That's fine by us, considering the caps lock key these days is mostly useless aside from those who like to troll the comments section. (In fact, I've remapped my caps lock key to backspace.)

Amusingly, Google joked, "We expect this will improve the quality of comments across the web."

For those who feel that they must have that caps lock key back, Google notes that those with the Cr-48 notebook can click on the wrench icon, go into System section inside settings and change the Modifier Key from Search back to Caps Lock.

So now, when I miss the Shift key, I have my task interrupted by a search window?

It'll be just like the Windows key- useful when you press it purposefully, and annoying when you don't.

READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE LEAVING A COMMENT!

The "CAP LOCK KEY" is still there but they changed the default to do a "Search" instead. YES, YOU CAN CHANGE IT BACK IF YOU WANT! SO NOT REALLY GONE!

Caps Lock is important to me while working; drafting engineering drawings. I don't mind the new function but would appreciate if the Caps Lock would be available in another convenient way. Say Ctrl - Caps Lock.

While this is OK for the soccer moms posting their pics on facebook, I support at least 3 applications that use all caps in entry fields, plus more that is a standard to use all caps in the business (hospital).

For everyone complaining, relax. This will only apply to notebooks using Google's Chrome OS - which the VAST majority of notebooks will not. Just like you do not see off the shelf notebooks with linux very much

BY REMOVING CAPS KEY THEY STRIP US OF ABILITY TO EMPHASIZE OUR OPINION OVER INTERNET. BY DOING THAT THEY CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK. THIS TREND WILL CONTINUE. THEY WILL KEEP SUBTLY ALTERING THE WAY WE THINK UNTIL WE ARE NOTHING MORE THAN AD CONSUMING PRODUCT.

Please don't yell, you are giving me a headache :(

i'm so old school i remember when everything was capital letters and there was no lower case. what i like most that everyone else has failed to comment or otherwise note; NO FLIPPEN' WINDOWS AND MENU KEYS !!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
those keys i can do with out. i would not hate them so much if they had been placed better , like perhap on top by the F keys which are rarely used or over by the page up/down home/end keys!

I have to admit I am not a fan of Caps Lock. I like having the uppercase letters where they belong. I hate it when I accidently press Caps Lock when typing fast in a game chat. That being said as stated several times lots of companies need to have this to do business. I don’t understand how a simple all caps can make people bleed out of their eyes and heads explode. Guess some people are just set off a lot easier then I am.

Regardless what I think of a caps lock key, I think a "search" key is as useless as the windows key or the other 15 "special" (including a search key) found on most keyboards already.

Might it alienate hemiplegics who like to be "corrent" in writing? Specially some stroke victims?
