Dell Outs Ultra HD 5K Monitor For $2,499

By - Source: Dell | B 45 comments

On Thursday, Dell introduced a number of new products in its Latitude and OptiPlex lines, as well as a Chromebox for meetings and a Chromebox for small- to medium-sized businesses. However, buried under all the new hardware announcements was a little gem that claims to be a world's first: an Ultra HD 5K monitor.

That's no typo; Dell has a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 (218 PPI). The actual name is the Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor, and it is aimed at professionals who need the highest display resolutions possible. It looks like Dell has provided precisely just that.

According to the company, the monitor has an anti-smudge, anti-reflective "edge-to-edge" screen. Specs are incomplete, but the display does come packed with a color depth of 1 billion colors, a miniDisplay Port for 4K input, two 16-watt Harmon Kardon speakers, six USB ports and an SD card reader.

Unfortunately, Dell provided only a preview of what's to come; specifications such as refresh rates and the response time were not provided. However, the 5K monitor is slated to launch in 4Q 2014, so we expect to know more once the display becomes available. What we do know is the pricing: $2,499.99.

Not much of an upgrade. 4K is already out dated and horribly inadequate for use today. 5K is just not enough of an improvement, they need to move to at least 8K, and also Make plans for a 16K display

Imagine how awesome 16K HD cat videos would look.

I guess I'm the only one who would like to see the 16:10 version of 4K (3840x2400).

I was trying to find an "appropriate" comment for that...but I can't. Lets just say it's not exactly referring to cats, but part of the female anatomy and how "detailed" it would look in 16K RES.

    How about a ~1000.00 38" 4K IPS Display @ 60Hz?

I feel like 4K's DPI at 27" is too high...I can barely differentiate pixels on a 27" 1440p display at 40 inches viewing distance.

So 4K is still expensive and require expensive video card to run and isn't common or relevant for screens under 26'' but they already want to sell us 5K monitor ?

    I have a 23'' monitor at 1080P and i don't see why i would even change for a 4K.

    This is UHD+ (5120x2880). Not 5K (5120x2160).

Why are we calling the UHD standard 4K—despite being a lower resolution—but calling this UHD+ monitor 5K despite it being a higher resolution?

Did you read the story? "...and it is aimed at professionals who need the highest display resolutions possible". I'm willing to bet that you and most of the commentators on this display are not part of that group. Depending on your definition of "professional", a $2499 5k monitor may be a valid business expense.

Nope. I love my 16x10's... I don't want to accept worse.

This seems weird, 4K isn't even standard yet (in the gaming world anyways) and I'd be willing to bet most users are still using 1080P or lower at this time. I'm assuming that something like this would be employed in a game development studio for modeling characters and such.

I have 3 30" at 2560x1600. I am very happy with the DPI on them. I'm not upgrading till 4K comes in 35" or bigger as my eye sight isn't that good to see higher DPI. I'm not putting my face right up to it so I can see that the pixels are smaller. A 16x10 4K at 35-40" @60Hz or higher is what I'm waiting for now.

They are going crazy in resolution department and we still have tons of applications that take no use of the more than 4 cores CPUs and GPUs are only mild upgrade to the last generation ...they even push 1440p in phones... what`s with this crazy rush about resolution anyway ?

And normal TV seems to be a dieing breed since they can`t push even 720p trough satellite at decent prices, everywhere HD TVs/smart etc and most of the stations are still SD, they just started to adapt 16:9 ...For now everything seems to be a huge mess ...

Possibly in future but as of now there is nothing to put out such high resolution even if professional so it must be up-scaled. Typical Apple, just being bigger = better just like Sharp and their ridiculous sized shit TVs just to snag people.

Not even the Quadro6000 can put out that much, it's max is 4096x2160@50Hz

    No, it uses dual DP.
