Report: Samsung to Launch 2560x1440 Smartphone in 2014
So. Many. Pixels.
Samsung's rumored to have five devices lined up for launch in early 2014, and it looks like one of those devices could be the first smartphone to pack a 2560 x 1440 display. Today, according to ZDNet Korea, there is a report that talks about Samsung's plans for its smartphone business in 2014. These plans apparently span three major technologies: QHD displays, Samsung's Iris verification system, and the company's Tizen OS.
While Iris and Tizen are interesting, the QHD display is what interests us the most. ZDNet writes that Samsung is currently figuring out how to mass produce the QHD displays with a resolution of 2560 x 1440.
Of course, this kind of feature seems like something Samsung would save for its flagship Galaxy S device. With rumors that the Galaxy S5 will be announced early in 2014, we're crossing our fingers that this display will be on the spec sheet when it rolls into our inbox.
Other rumored specs for the Galaxy S5 include a 64-bit chip and a 16-megapixel camera.

There's no reason for anything over 1080p on a screen that small
As long as the OS does font and UI element scaling properly, this should work fine. QHD on a <5" screen seems like it is well into the "diminishing returns" category, but I suppose that I will reserve final judgment for when I actually get to look at one. It really just looks like a parallel to the megapixel marketing wars in the pocket digicam world.
My GSIII with 720p resolution has almost indiscernible pixels as it is, but I can see them if I am really trying hard...which is never a normal use case for me.

Actually there is no reason for anything beyond 720 on a screen that size. I have a Lumia 920 and I can only see the pixels if I strain my eyes to the point where they hurt...

"And yet, laptops acroos the board are still saddled with 1366x768 TN panels."
Exactly. They really should be working on putting 1920x1080 (or higher) in their laptops first.
Can we stick to the actual facts on Tomshardware? That's what I read this site for. If we know that Samsung has concrete plans and a roadmap with a projected release date that's one thing, but this stuff that is almost all conjecture based on something someone saw somewhere is on the level of water-cooler gossip.
Meanwhile still no affordable 2560x1440 monitors.
Phones are running out of steam so they're throwing everything and the sink into them to try and keep the hype alive.
