Laptop Falls From Helicopter, Narrowly Misses Boy
Laptop bombs-away!
Most of us would love it if computers would just fall from the sky. After all, that would really do away with the whole bother of having to go out and buy one. But when a laptop falls from the sky and nearly hits you, possibly causing mortal harm, it's an entirely different story.
That happened to a 10-year-old boy in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Grayson Peterka was standing outside during a family cookout on Saturday when a laptop fell off from the skid of an airborne helicopter that was leaving the local hospital.
"I heard the helicopter going by. It was pretty low and then they made like a turn. When that happened it fell to the ground," the boy said, adding that the impact of the laptop hitting the ground made a sound almost like a gunshot.
Grayson then called out to his aunt Laura Colon. "'What's that?' It was really loud and not more than two seconds later my little nephew comes around the corner and says 'Auntie Laura, something just fell out of the sky and it almost hit me,'" she said. "We came around the side of the garage here and we found a laptop and it was most definitely something that fell. It was busted up pretty good. I looked on the back and I saw Life Link and I said 'No way, that doesn't happen.'"
Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the only reason why the hospital was called in was to retrieve the computer.

wow... it looks like the "Toughbook 19 Rugged Tablet PC ".... man.. that thing worth more than $4350!!!!
I am glade that kid was not hurt!
By the way,... I am wondering... since it is a rugged tablet..... can it still boot up after the drop?
That kid should check to see if it's still under warranty and send it in. Toughbooks cover that I think.
That kid is darned luck!
I wonder if the hospital will reward him with a new laptop because of the close call?
wonder if a toughbook like that would've survived a drop like that if the kid cushioned its fall...
not that it's my desired scenario mind you, just wondering... =p
Maybe he'll get a Public Relations helicopter flight
lol...

Maybe he'll get a Public Relations helicopter flight
And risk the kid falling off the helicopter when it turns?
"Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the only reason why the hospital was called in was to retrieve the computer."
The hospital was called to retrieve the laptop? O.o
And risk the kid falling off the helicopter when it turns?
We wouldn't want him to hit a laptop.
I must say that going by the picture the laptop took the impact pretty well. That thing is structurally sound.
He was almost hit. So,
Does almost mean inches or feet(or centimeters and meters if you prefer).
Anyone else find it ironic that a laptop with life link almost did the kid in
That is how they stay in business....
Is anything salvageable?
sounds like another person got frustrated with there cheap HP laptop
Brings a new meaning to the phrase "my computer crashed".
Not such a great ad campaign for Panasonic Toughbooks, or was it "Dude, you're getting a Dell dropped on your head!"
"Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the only reason why the hospital was called in was to retrieve the computer."The hospital was called to retrieve the laptop? O.o
I would have kept the damned thing and sued the hospital!
A toughbook got destroyed, and lifelink is nearly responsible for harming a child.
ITS NOT A NEAR MISS! ITS A NEAR HIT!
R.I.P George Carlin
but, does it still play crysis?
notebook rain
How sure are we that he almost got hit hell he could have been inside then saw it hit the ground?
Little boy vs thoughbook, I have no doubt who'd have won
How bad a$$ would it have been had he caught it out of the air... I mean, it's far more likely if he'd tried to catch it the laptop would have caved in his cranium... but it'd be cool to attempt.
Definitely looks like a toughbook but but not tough enough for terminal velocity inpact.
I wonder what the terminal velocity of these things are.
That looks pretty beat up, If it fell on grass then I couldnt imagine jumping up and throwing it down as hard as i could to make it look like that.
I can just imagine the medic, sitting next to the laptop, they make a turn, it starts to slip on the seat, he rushes to grab it, OH OH OH OH!!!!!!!
"OMFG! Guys the laptop just dropped out."
An extremely tenuous tech story, fellas...
Grayson then called out to his aunt Laura Colon. "'What's that?'
"My Intestine" she replied, weakly.
"Call the hospital."
I love the expression on the little guy's face, i lol'd
Who cares? Nothing happened, that's all that counts.
BOOM HEADSHOT!!!
JK... Really... **stifles laughter**
"Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the only reason why the hospital was called in was to retrieve the computer."The hospital was called to retrieve the laptop? O.o
One word: HIPAA
Ok, so it's an acronym. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act provides stiff penalties to organizations that don't take adequate steps to protect PHI (Protected Health Information). So, yeah, even if the laptop were obliterated, they would still send someone to retrieve it if possible.
@bogcotton
The terminal velocity of something with the general shape and weight of a laptop would be on the order of 100 - 120 MPG (160 - 193 KPH). Suffice it to say, that is plenty lethal.
I wonder why scapped computers aren't used as bombs...seriously...shrapnel, battery acid, and they never go away!
