Five Gaming Enclosures, Rounded Up
We've had a number of cases through the lab as of late. Today's excursion takes us away from HTPC or small form factor enclosures and straight into the realm of gaming chassis. Entries from ABS, Antec, Lian-Li, Thermaltake, and NZXT vie for a win. Read More

The Bigger, Quieter Xbox360; Not from Microsoft

Next news
8:00 PM - February 18, 2009 by Tuan Nguyen

Is your Xbox 360 noisy? Perhaps you don't own an Xbox 360 because you've heard that they're noisy (maybe). This week a company called Quiet PC launched a line of Xbox 360 consoles that aren't Xbox 360 consoles at all.

What Quiet PC has done is taken out all the innards of an Xbox 360, and implanted them into a custom made Lian-Li XB-01B case, made specifically to hold the Xbox 360 motherboard as well as everything else. Everything moves over. All the ports and connectors on a real Xbox 360 enclosure is on the Lian-Li XB-01B.

The biggest benefit of the Ultra-Quiet Xbox 360s are the fact that they come with two huge fans: a 120mm and a 100mm low RPM fan. To enclose everything however, the new case is quite large--in fact, the Ultra-Quiet Xbox 360 is double the size of a normal Xbox 360. Quiet PC states that the size allows components to be spread out and free up space for low-RPM but high-CFM active cooling.

Quiet PC is currently shipping pre-built Xbox 360s as well as bare enclosures for those who want to do the transplant themselves. Quiet PC sells both the Arcade, Premium and Elite versions of the Xbox 360 in the new modification, and units come with a 360-day warranty--since gutting the original Xbox 360 voids Microsoft's warranty. Curiously, the new warranty is five days short of a full year.

Pricing starts at $435 USD for the basic Ultra-Quiet Xbox 360 Arcade.

I've actually been considering doing this kind of stuff with 360s as a small source of income when I head off to college next year. Anybody think there's a big enough market to justify it?

I will take the three year warranty and the "loud" console. You can't hear it while you are playing anyways... so what does it matter if it is loud...

360's are not loud. your mid range computer with 4-5 high speed 80 mm fans... now thats loud. now i know quiet pc's are becoming all the rage(rightfully so) but this is silly.

These cases have been out for a year, but is a great idea. Problem is that you void the warranty by using it I believe.

Extending the life of your Xbox360 with cooler running components is not a bad idea. I think there is a market for it.

Good idea but when Microsoft publishes an update which could create RROD what then? Can't send that to microsoft.

Nobody uses high speed 80mm fans anymore though ... everybody's moved on to 120mm low speed ones, or pwm controlled 120mm fans.

Did you not read the article? Of course it voids the warranty.

3yr warranty from microsoft only covers if your x360 has 3 RRoD

There's a market for this but only for the Elite. The whole point of the arcade is that it's cheap. The person who buys an arcade system is going for price, hence a system that's double the price is pointless.

Still modding the 360 is pretty cool. I still remember being in awe of the guy who basically made a laptop version of his 360. That's the kind of modding I would go for.

Mod a 360 into a Laptop would be KILLER!

when i play the 360 i can find it a bit loud,,,but only when i'm sitting 4 feet from it,,,sit further away from it or move it further away from the tv,,,a new hdmi cable is less than $50,,, a whole lot cheaper than doing this,,the controllers don't need to "see" the unit to work.

That's all gravy........ until microsoft thinks you've modded your Xbox with a chip and bans you from Live.

Is there chassis intrusion circuitry in the 360? I had always thought they scrapped that idea, even though it's been rumored since the first generation Xbox. I know many people who have opened and shut, or just plain opened and left open their 360 cases and haven't had a problem. What would make Xbox Live ever think the chassis was any different?

what about the environment friendly developers developing their computers to heat up a hot water tub?

This idea looks just like that! A bath tub with the xbox interiors.

nope, i've taken mine apart. fixed hardware issue and not it works great. the only thing is they have this sticker that you have to remove which voids your warrantee, but even that can be worked around, see google / youtube on how to remove sticker without damaging it... :->

Is it that hard a choice? Or take the 120gb elite with 3 years warranty, or take the ugly, huge, 0gb arcade system with the oddly stupid 360 days warranty. The answer is so stupid i dont dare to say it.

I wouldn't mind this as much if it looked more like Audio equipment to fit into my audio rack. At this point, it looks like a Mini-Tower PC....

Also, with all of that space couldn't they at least integrate a power supply into it?

Hey now, some of us have a 8-year old Antec case that only supports 80mm fans. I couldn't justify spending another $100-$200 to replace it when upgrading the rest of my computer. The thing is a beast, I've used it as a step-stool in the past. Weighs like 40-50 pounds with everything in it. But yeah, the 5 80mm fans are a little noisy.

Then at least have the decency to treat your ancient case with some proper fans! pick up a bunch of arctic cooling's 80mm pwm controlled fans. They come with a cable loop attached so u can add a bunch of them to your cpu cooler's pwm jack and just activate it in your bios ....
if you ask me $100 is a small price to pay for a significant noise reduction.

bry: thats why you dont get these "DELTA" fans unless you're an enthusiast.
