QOTD: What's the Oldest Console You Still Play?

Next news
8:01 PM - May 21, 2009 by Marcus Yam, Jane McEntegart, Tuan Nguyen

While we all love our PC games, some of our fondest gaming memories were in front of the TV with a console. The Nintendo Entertainment System practically raised an entire generation, so to say that consoles aren't a big part of our gaming heritage would be remiss.

Marcus: I learned all about video games from the NES, but these days when I get the inkling to play any of the old school games that are stowed somewhere in a box in my basement, I just break out the emulators that run fairly well on my iPhone. The oldest console that I still have hooked up to a TV is a Dreamcast, which will always have a special place in my heart. *Reminisces of days gone by with Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Soul Calibur, Space Channel 5, Shenmue, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Crazy Taxi.*

Jane: Well, doesn’t this bring back traumatic memories? I would be able to say NES, if some jerk hadn’t thrown mine away when I was a young’un. For the purpose of this story, let’s call this jerk “John McEntegart,” because that’s his name. One day I went to play my NES, and I couldn’t find it anywhere. Just a single lonesome controller. I asked my father, “Dad, if you were a NES, where would you be?” His response, “In the bin.” My dad threw my NES away because, and I quote, “But you have a PlayStation now, you don’t need it anymore.” I think that controller is still in my dad’s place. It no doubt reminds him of the first time his daughter ever went full on Village of the Damned on him. Memories. Oldest console that wasn’t thrown away by some jerk during my formative years? Xbox or PlayStation.

Tuan: I haven't touched a console in a long time, let alone an old one. The last console I spent anytime with was my PlayStation 3. These days, if I play any old game, it's through an emulator. Despite this, sometimes I still wish I had my original NES or Genesis.

The question of the day is: What's the oldest console you still play on?

Oldest console - how about the original Atari 2600!!! Still got mine, still works, and still fire it up to play my bazillion cartidges when I feel like doing it "old skool". Love those rapid-fire joysticks.

Call me an old fart if you like, but collectors out there would envy my setup - still in brand-spanking new condition.

well.. ofcouse my old n64 goldeneye or perfect dark gets fired up occasionally, but the oldest I still wish i had, is surely the snes, and some nes games, but nowadays when we are used to savegames, most nes games are kinda frustrating.. never played sega or atari.. seems like my country was nintendo..

I was player Conker emulated recently.
Just gave away my xbox and 20-30 games however.
Own a Sega Genesis, but it hasn't been used in around 2 years.
I don't even use my PS2 anymore though.

XBOX 360 is the oldest system... my computer is newer (which I play everything else on).

Well i like to play Final Fantasy on the NES. Civilization, and Sim Ant on SNES, Perfect Dark on N64. I'm sure I could keep going on and on, but the ones I still have and play are SNES and N64 and that for the Zelda Games I still play. Oh and I don't know if this one is old yet, but I do like Wind Waker on the Game Cube. LONG LIVE NINTENDO!!! MARIO FOR EVER!!!!
