AMD's next-generation R9 270X will reportedly feature a similar "Tahiti LE" to the Radeon HD 7950 and HD 7870 limited edition.

According to a post from Overclockers UK staff member "Gibbo," AMD's upcoming mid-range R9 270X graphics card will include a revised version of the "Tahiti LE" core that he describes as a "crippled HD 7950" with 2 GB of memory over a 256-bit memory bus.

Though technical specifications aren't publicly available yet, the presence of "Tahiti LE" core suggests that the graphics card will feature between 1,536 (HD 7870 LE) and 1,792 shader units and that the GPU may be clocked at between 800 MHz (HD 7950) and 975 MHz (HD 7870 LE).

The Radeon R9 270X has been priced at $199 and is expected to arrive on retail shelves in October.

I just had enough with this re-branding business. if you don't have a entirely new product line-up to sell, then just introduce that one or two new products that you have. stop throwing your old stuffs in and re-branding them to confuse your customers. That applies to you, too. Nvidia

seems pointless when a HD7950 can be had for $199 or less. Would make more sense if it was =>HD7950

Whats the point of having rebrands lol. In Nvidia u lose ur SLI compability with same older card. In AMD u lose flexibility, because the newer SAME card with diff name have to be the Primary graphic card.

Wait, I thought the 7870 XT was a crippled 7950, with almost 7950 performance, so if the R9 270x is a faster 7870 XT, it should be on par with the 7950. If not a couple of FPS off, and you could probably overclock to between 7950-7970 levels

rebranding is a way to try to fool your avg person into thinking it's a newer card when in fact all it is are extra last gen gpu dies that these companies have that they need to find away to get rid of.

Sounds like PR attack from nVidia.

One of the reasons I moved away from Nvidia was the whole flogging a dead horse 8800 mid-range series debacle. Same re-branded chip held them over for three generations iirc.

wow amd.. a real winner here... wait lets use last year technology, drop a new name and the average person doesnt have a clue what they are buying and keep selling the card for the same price as last years model. thought when newer chips come out older generation gets CHEAPER and when was tahiti an Hawaiian island??

Maybe we should wait until the NDA is lifted and we ACTUALLY find out what these new cards are, instead of assuming these reports are 100% correct.

On the plus side Pitcairn is unlikely to be part of the "new" line up!
