  • DVD+RW Alliance: 8cm DVD+R/+RW DL discs to be volume produced in Q4

    International vendors of optical discs, in light of growing demand for 8cm single-sided single-layer DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, are expected to begin volume production of 8cm DL (single-sided double-layer) DVD+R and DVD+RW discs in the fourth quarter of this year, according to DVD+RW Alliance representatives attending the ongoing Computex Taipei 2006.
  • Memory-Tech and Toshiba develop triple-layer HD DVD / DVD

    In a joint project, Memory-Tech and Toshiba today announced that the two firms have developed a one-side, three-layer disc for both DVD and HD DVD formats. The new technology will pave the way to higher capacity hybrid storage on a single disc.

    The DVD Forum plans to draw up a blue-laser HD DVD-ROM format specifically for and only available in the China market in response to the request by two China-based organizations, the government-sponsored Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC) and the state-run China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC).

    With Plextor recently announcing its PX-760A 18x DVD burner (DVD+/-R/RW CD-R/RW), Lite-On IT stated it also plans to volume produce 18x DVD burners in the third quarter of this year, though BenQ currently does not have any plans for the segment at the moment, according to executives from the two Taiwan-based companies.
