Seagate Brings Out Backup Plus FAST External Drive

The world's first portable 4 TB storage device.

Seagate Technology has introduced the Backup Plus FAST portable drive, the world's first portable storage device with 4 TB of space. The company boasts that it's the perfect companion for field photographers and filmmakers looking to quickly backup large files.

According to Seagate, the drive is configured as RAID 0, which stripes the data across both drives, increasing the volume capacity and transfer speed. This detail indicates that there are two 2.5-inch hard drives crammed into a single enclosure.

The company reports that the enclosure features a metal top-case that's resistant to scratches and fingerprints. This drive also does not need an external power supply, as it's completely bus powered by a USB 3.0 connection. Seagate says this drive pushes transfers of up to 220 MB per second.

The new drive comes bundled with Seagate's one-click "Dashboard" backup software solution. The Dashboard software will back up Facebook and Flikr albums so that users have peace of mind knowing videos and photos shared across the Internet are backed up and stored locally in an easy-to-find folder. Customers can even use the Save and Share features to download and upload content from these social network sites.

In addition to the Dashboard software, the company also provides mobile apps for iOS and Android for backing up pictures, videos and more to a drive or cloud service such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Backup from mobile devices can also be sent directly to the drive via a Wi-Fi connection.

"With Backup Plus FAST, Seagate has taken a very mature product category and has delivered innovative enhancements to address the real world challenges of our customers," said Scott Horn, vice president of global marketing for Seagate. "The performance and capacity of this new portable drive is beyond that of any other external offering to date. We believe that the Backup Plus FAST drive will be widely adopted by creative professionals as the go-to back up device for the field."

The 4 TB Seagate Backup Plus FAST portable drive is currently available from Seagate.com for $299.99.

I guess it's two 9.5mm 3 platter 667GB hard drives. Would be better if they were hybrid to bring even more performance.

The only way it can be 4TB and Raid 0 is to have two or more 4TB volumes inside.

raid 0 takes two drives and stripes them. 2 2tb drives will make a single 4tb drive Amd write and read half the data to each drive.
