Las Vegas (NV) - One of the first opportunities to get your hands on a 1.8", NAND flash-based solid state disk (SSD) drives may be Samsung's upgraded ultra mobile PC (UMPC).

See Samsung's hybrid hard drive and SSDs in pictures ...

The new "Q1P SSD" integrates Samsung's 32 GB SSD instead of the 1.8" hard drives of the original Q1 and Q1P. As a result of the SSD, Samsung claims that the device achieves a boot time that is about 25-50% faster than a comparable device with a traditional hard drive. The SSD is rated at data read speed of 53 MB/s and a data write speed of 28 MB/s. Also, Samsung claims that the Q1P SSD UMPC is able to withstand twice the impact of the hard-drive-enabled model.

Other features of the device include a (single-core) Pentium M ULV 1.0 GHz processor, Intel's 915 GMS integrated graphics chipset, 1 GB DDR2-533 memory, a 7" 800x480 pixel screen as well as Wi-Fi b/g, 10/100 Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.

According to Samsung, the Q1P SSD UMPC is available now. Unfortunately, the device is not only the fastest UMPC on the market, but also the most expensive. At a suggested retail price of $2000, Samsung takes a $700 premium over the hard-drive equipped Q1P. The original Q1 remains in the product portfolio and is now priced at $1000.
