Buyer's Guide: 11 Color Inkjet Printers

Color Inkjet Printers From Canon

Canon Pixma IP1800

With some careful shopping around, you can find this photo-oriented printer for under $50. It handles glossy photo papers in sizes that range from credit card (3.5" x 2" or 8.89cm x 5.08cm) to conventional letter pages (8.5" x 11" or 21.59cm x 27.94cm). The Pixma iP1800 also offers sharp, clear text quality for monochrome and color documents as well.

The Canon Pixma iP1800 is small and unassuming, but produces great output.

The print head features 320 nozzles for black ink, and 384 nozzles each for the cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY) colored inks its cartridge delivers (total 1,472 in all). Printing in monochrome black, this printer delivers 600x600 resolution; in color it delivers 4800x1200 dpi. Noise level printing in best quality mode is a noticeable but not ear-splitting 43 dB(A).

The printer is relatively small and light, with a weight of 7.3 pounds (3.31 kg), and dimensions of 17.4" x 6.0" x 9.3" (44.20cm x 15.24cm x 23.62cm). It supports all modern versions of Window plus Mac OS X v10.2.8 through 10.4.x. Despite its low price, it delivers up to 20 ppm for black output, and up to 16 ppm for color output for documents. Printing a 4x6 borderless photo takes approximately 70 seconds. Consumables include a black cartridge (retails for around $16) and a color cartridge (retails for around $20), plus various bundles and larger "ink tanks".
