Serial ATA Is Here: Seagate Barracuda ATA V and Five of the Latest Controllers Reviewed

Application Performance

Interface Bandwidth

In this test we separate the men from the boys, as soon as we deploy different platforms. On our test motherboard with the VIA KT400 chipset and the latest South Bridge (VT8235), all controllers achieved transfer rates of 80 - 84 MBytes/sec. Our standard system for hard disk tests, (Intel D845EBT) with the Intel 845 chipset and ICH4 South Bridge, does not seem to suit the Promise controllers, since they max out at just 63 MBytes/sec. The RocketRAID 1540 suffers from exactly the same problem.

This is quite astonishing, as Intel chipsets have for many years provided the fastest PCI performance.
