Lite-On IT likely to become world's largest maker of DVD burners

Lite-On IT has reportedly obtained OEM orders for half-height (H/H) DVD burners from NEC through its strategic-alliance partner Sony, according to industry sources.

Although advanced technology attachment packet interface (ATAPI) is the mainstream interface standard for optical disc drives (ODDs) currently, serial ATA (SATA) stands a chance of replacing the former in the second half of 2007, according to sources in Taiwan's ODD manufacturing industry.

We already have sub-$100 16X speed DVD burners, but 20X burners should be readily available later this year. Major PC makers like HP and Dell are looking into the speedier burners for upcoming models.
Lite-On IT said to ship 18x LightScribe DVD burners to HP in November

While Lite-On IT is expected to start shipping 18x DVD burners to Hewlett-Packard (HP) this month, the growing tension in competition between Lite-On IT, Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) facilitated OEM prices to further drop, according to sources at Taiwan-based optical disk drive (ODD) makers.
Taiwan Makers Conservative About 6x BD Burners

In response to the launch of LG Electronics' latest Blu-ray Disc (BD) burner (GGW-H20L), complete with claims of it being the first BD burner to support 6x BD-R SL (single-sided single-layer) write speeds, sources at Taiwan-based makers of optical disc drives commented that the 6x write speed claims are meaningful more for marketing purposes rather than practical ones, as 6x BD-R discs are not available yet.
