Taiwan optical disc makers: OEM prices of 4x, 8x DVD discs drop to below cost

Anticipating that 16x DVD+R/-R discs will soon become the mainstream optical-disc product, leading optical-disc makers have begun lowering OEM quotations for 8x DVD+R/-R discs to US$0.30 and for 4x DVD+R/-R discs to US$0.22-0.24, which is lower than production cost for other makers as the price of the key component polycarbonate (PC) has been driven up to US$3.1 per kilogram, according to Taiwan optical-disc makers.

Ritek and CMC to up DVD DL disc production capacity

Ritek and CMC Magnetics, in view of growing global demand, will expand their monthly production capacities of DVD DL (single-sided double-layer) discs from three million discs to five million, and from one million discs to two million, respectively, at the end of this year, according to the two companies.
Inphase promises 300 GByte holographic disc for 2006

Inphase currently demonstrates its Tapestry drives and holographic media at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas. After five years of development, the manufacturer says the photopolymer-based discs will enter mass production next year.

Earlier this week, LG announced a hybrid HD DVD - Blu-ray player; Warner followed up late Tuesday with a hybrid hi-def disc that can be played both in HD DVD and Blu-ray players.
