Such drives are equipped expensive memory chips, which prevented the technology to penetrate a mass market so far. The technology is making its way down the adopter pyramid, but today, it is mainly an industry solution that often is chosen because of cost reasons.

    Harddrives using perpendicular recording are on track to hit the market in early 2006 with capacities of up to 160 or even 200 GByte in 2.5" form factors. Consumer electronics using these devices could follow soon thereafter - but Hollywod may have a say in how quickly these monster drives make their way into portable audio and video players, Tom's Hardware Guide has learned.
  • Hitachi sees 5 TByte harddrives and 60 GByte microdrives

    Hitachi believes perpendicular recording will allow harddrive engineers to take sub-1" microdrives to 60 GByte and desktop harddrives beyond a TByte. The company demonstrated the technology with a density of 230 Gbit per square inch which is about 70 percent more than in today's highest density production drives.
  • Miniature harddrives to fuel industry growth in 2005, report

    After shipping 305 million units in 2004, the harddrive industry is expected to expand to rapidly this year. Market research firm Trendfocus attributes the growth to skyrocketing demand of of 1.8" and smaller storage devices.
