Ozone layer unlikely to recover until 2065

The ozone hole over Antarctica might persist until 2065, which is two decades longer than predicted, because ozone-destroying chemicals are still being released by developed nations more than a decade after their production and importation was banned.

The first Blu-ray Disc burner drives are making their way to Japanese store shelves this June, it was revealed today. They will carry the Panasonic brand name, and they will have all the bells and whistles that Blu-ray has promised since the beginning, including dual-layer (50 GB) support, and a complete suite of downward compatibility support with DVD. Nothing is being held back.
Memory-Tech and Toshiba develop triple-layer HD DVD / DVD

In a joint project, Memory-Tech and Toshiba today announced that the two firms have developed a one-side, three-layer disc for both DVD and HD DVD formats. The new technology will pave the way to higher capacity hybrid storage on a single disc.
Sony introduces first double layer DVD drives

Sony is the first company to officially announce DVD burners which can record double layer (DL) DVDs. Scheduled to ship at the end of the second quarter of this year, Sony's drives will support DVD±R which boast a capacity of 8.5 GByte.

Nearly all manufacturers have come out this year with a DVD burner rated at 16x writing speed, and we tested 10 of them. We found that performance differs between devices, but only slightly; the exception is dual-layer writing, where speeds still vary a great deal. The real distinction is in how the burners recognize 16x media; the results here are rather astonishing!
