New transistor material could help extend Moore's Law

Reducing the power consumption of future chips is research priority in today's semiconductor industry. Experimenting with new materials that could substitute or complement today's silicon substrates is considered a critical step in this effort - and Intel claims it has discovered yet another material that has the potential to let chips run cooler and consume less energy.

Such a thing may be possible with a new line of hybrid zero thermal expansion materials which are proving suitable for semiconductor use, as well as a new class of positive, negative or zero thermal expansion materials. Heat may soon be our enemy no longer.

A report published by the Imperial College London and the University of Neuchatel (Switzerland) in the journal Nature Materials says that researchers have demonstrated an effect that solid material can become transparent when hit by a laser.
