Intel has made several changes to its processor road-map, delaying its first dual-core Itanium 2 and replacing a future multi-core Xeon with a new design. -

An Intel spokesperson confirmed to TG Daily this afternoon that the company's IA-64 platform will be dropping all on-die support for hardware-based 32-bit application execution. This includes both IA-32 and x86 platforms, emulation for which will now be moved to a software-based layer. -

During its five years of existence, the Itanium processor never achieved the glory Intel was hoping for: Itanium has to deal with stiff competition and critics still call it the "Itanic". But Intel holds on to its problem child and sends it into another round: Montecito has two cores and, according top Intel, is twice as fast as the previous single-core. -

Intel has been sending out invitations to a product introduction tomorrow, Tuesday 18 July. While the invitation itself is worded in a very fuzzy, there appears to be little doubt that Intel will unveil its new dual-core Itanium 2 processor. -

Intel plans to add its dual-core Itanium 2 CPU line, dubbed "Montecito," to to its current Xeon 5100 series (codenamed Woodcrest) and Dempsey processor offerings on 18 July, according to sources at Taiwan server makers.
