Microsoft takes OneCare security suite live

Slightly ahead of schedule, Microsoft today released the final version of its first contender in the commercial security software segment: Windows Live OneCare includes a software bundle that promises to defend computers against common malware threats as well as free support for users that need advice in protecting their system or removing a virus.

It's priced below competitive offers and may force other vendors to rethink their product strategy. Microsoft's recent release of the Windows Live OneCare security offering has reset the rules of the security software business: Traditional security software developers are forced to upgrade their products. McAfee is among the first to answer with a beta version of its next-gen security suite that addresses new and emerging threats such as identity theft and rootkits.
Microsoft to offer PC care package for $50 per year

Microsoft announced that it will be rolling out the commercial version of its OneCare Live service in June of this year. Designed to compete with similar products typically offered by anti-virus companies, Microsoft hopes to gain traction with and extended service that is seamlessly integrated into Windows.
