Tom's Interactive Enterprise Hard Drive Charts compare high-end server/workstation hard drives used in enterprise-class systems. The 15 benchmarks we used as a testing platform are the same as the ones featured in the other HDD Charts, but the interpretation of the data is different in the enterprise segment: Servers often depend on maximum I/O performance rather than on raw throughput. Of course, you can also check various other criteria: read and write throughput, sorted by average, minimum and maximum, access time, interface performance and four I/O benchmark patterns.

New Plextor drive "obliterates" data on CDs/DVDs with laser blasts

Plextor has announced a new drive that erases CDs and DVDs by blasting them with laser light. The PlexEraser PX-OE100E "obliterates" the data layer on almost every format of recordable CD and DVD and can even handle dual-layer discs. Each disc takes about three minutes to erase and the drive then marks the disc to show it has been processed.

Plextor introduces 12x SATA DVD±R/RW Drive

Plextor announced its new PX-712SA DVD±R/RW drive, which offers 12x recording speed for DVD+R and 8x for 8X DVD-R. "Plus" DVD media reach a recording speed of 4x. CD-R and CD-RW media are recorded in 48x and 24x.

The race for Xs is still on and Plextor has gone into the lead with the PX-708A, what Plextor claims is the first commercialized 8X DVD recorder. At this speed, a 4.38 GB DVD+R takes under 9 minutes to record. That is about the same as a CD in just over a minute. What we wanted to know was whether the reliability and compatibility of blank supports suffer from this breakneck speed.
