  • CPU Charts 2007

    Tom's Interactive CPU Charts offer the most comprehensive x86 processor comparison on the Internet. The 2007 edition includes as many as 91 AMD and Intel desktop processors, which we tested across 35 individual benchmarks under Windows Vista. The benchmarks include industry standard software as well as popular workloads across multiple application categories, allowing you to find the CPU that meets your requirements (see benchmark details below the charts). The Charts are also a valuable tool if you want to check how your computer stacks up against current hardware. The 2007 charts include three different processor generations, starting with AMD's Socket 939 Athlons and Semprons, and including all Pentium 4 and Pentium D processors that were released for Socket 775.

    In an email sent to vendors at the CES 2006, Microsoft for the first time outlined some system requirements for its upcoming operating system. These guidelines are a first indication of how much horsepower Windows Vista will require to be able to deliver on Microsoft's promises.

    A Microsoft strategist told attendees of the TechEd 2005 conference on the Gold Coast last week that Windows Vista's new display driver model may compel users to upgrade to a PC with 2 GByte of DDR3 SDRAM and a graphics card with at least 256 MByte memory, according to Australian PC enthusiast publication APC Magazine .

    Microsoft unveiled here at PDC 2005 the new 3D hardware acceleration dependencies of Windows Vista that will be realized even for ordinary 2D renderings. Tom's Hardware Guide learned that Microsoft intends to offer a "tiered" experience - the basics will run on an integrated chipset, but all the bells and whistles will call for a capable 256 MByte discrete graphics board.
