GDDR4 can surpass XDR performance in certain scenarios, Samsung says

Samsung yesterday surprised with an announcement that it has begun sampling of GDDR4 memory, which may become the next-generation memory technology for graphics chips. Today, the company told TG Daily that GDDR4 in fact will be fast enough to reach the speed of Rambus' XDR memory technology. -

Elpida begins sampling 512Mbit XDR DRAM

Japan-based Elpida Memory on March 22 announced the availability of 512Mbit XDR DRAM devices in sample quantities. XDR DRAM is based on the XDR memory interface architecture developed by Rambus, and the new Elpida device operates at a 4.0 GHz data rate, providing what the DRAM maker calls an industry-leading data transfer rate of 8.0 GB/sec within a single device. -
Elpida, Toshiba sample XDR DRAM modules

Elpida and Toshiba simultaneously announced availability of XDR DRAM modules in sample quantities. XDR will make its debut in Sony's next PlayStation and other consumer electronics devices and is prepped for use in high-end graphics cards.
