5.1 only allows Center speaker OR Subwoofer

Hey guys,

I have a problem with my 5.1 that's been driving me insane for weeks. I've searched and searched the internet and can't seem to find a solution.

The short version is that I'm currently using a Logitech Z906 5.1 speaker setup with Windows 7 Pro driven through the on board soundcard of an Asus P8Z68 VLX motherboard. The PC is connected to the speakers via 6-Channel Analogue (Red, Green Orange connectors). All of this is then managed through the Realtek HD Audio Manager.

The problem I'm having is that I can't get the Center speaker AND the Subwoofer to work. I can use the Realtek HD Audio Manager to swap between them using the "Swap Center / Subwoofer output" option, but I can't find any scenario that gets them both working.

What's even more bizarre (and slightly disconcerting) is that I can only get the two rear speakers and center and/or subwoofer to be recognized if I UNCHECK them in the Optional Speakers section of the Realtek and/or Windows speaker settings dialogue. This results in the very weird situation that a sound test on those speakers only works if they're greyed out. It's odd and feels wrong.

Does anyone have hints or tips that can help me figure this out? It's driving me insane. frown

By default you should be using:
Orange - sub/center
Black - rear
Green - front

It doesn't really matter, because you can remap the channels as you want.
This image shows how to enable a pop-up that shows whenever you connect something to any audio port.

It allows you to select audio channels that are send to that particular port.
Try enabling this feature and setting all ports manually.

Oops. You're entirely right - I AM actually using Black, Orange and Green. I meant to say that in my original post. My bad. :(

Realtek HD Audio Manager is currently reporting that the correct 3 slots are active, i.e.

Green - Front Speakers Out
Orange - Center/Subwoofer Out
Black - Rear Speaker Out

Maybe i got something totally wrong, but what's the 6-Channel Analogue for? You should connect the subwoofer via the digital optical or copper cable to the pc and the small speakers to the subwoofer. That way the 5.1 decoder in your Z906 will work and you will get all speakers running.
