The Matshita DVD drive I have (model in the subject) does not read any DVDs/CDs at all. As I insert a disc into the drive the orange light on it flashes for a second or two and then nothing else happens. The drive does not seem to try to read the disc at all, after the two second flash it goes quiet/dead. When I attempt to open the drive on the system it ejects the drive drawer and prompts me to insert a disc.

There is no error message at any point and the system claims that the drive is working correctly. When I check for the driver update in the device manager, it says that the driver is up to date. Just to be on the safe side I uninstalled the driver anyway, rebooted and then the system installed the driver automatically without any problems and gladly informed me that the drive is ready to use but the problem persisted. After a bit of googling I found that people solved similar problems by deleting Upper Filters/Lower Filters values in the registry. I did that (by following the instructions found here http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=3&model=F80Q&id=20100116142234421&page=1&SLanguage=en-us) but it didn't help at all.

I have an Asus N53SV with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have had this laptop for over 2 years now and I am sure the drive used to work correctly at some point in the past. However, as I use the drive very rarely I have no idea when it stopped working.

I am at a loss here and have no clue whatsoever on how to proceed. Any help will be much appreciated.

Nope, its time for retirement. Give it a good farewell, and look for a replacement drive. Good luck.

On a side note, one thing you can try before trashing it, is to try to clean the lens of the drive, you can use soft cloth or after market DVD cleaning kit, see what happens.
Do you have a bootable media(DVD) of OS ? If so put the media into the tray and restart the Lappy, if you got the message "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD" then probably the DVD drive is ok, else its gone.

BTW are you sure the disks are alright, that you are trying to play ?

Thanks for your reply. Following your advice, I tried booting from an OS dvd yet the results were the same - the drive acts as if the tray was completely empty.

The disks are fine too - I tried booting from the same OS disk on another laptop and it went just fine.

So, is that definitive then? Shall I kiss the drive goodbye or is there still something I could try?

Well, what do you know, cleaning it actually helped!

I do feel horribly embarrassed that cleaning it didn't occur to me at all, even though the whole drive did seem dusty as hell (shows how truly often I use it). No wonder it acted like the tray was empty, it couldn't see a thing lol

Thanks a lot for your help!
