I used it this morning, done a Virus scan with AVG and it done an update, i shut it down properly and got home from work and started it up to find this error message.
I have an Acer Travelmate 8000 with Windows XP
I have tried everything i've read about. i have no floppy disc no cd i've checked the BIOS drive order. im not very computer literate. i dont have the original disc i bought the computer second hand with nothing.
Please can someone help me!

Solution
Simple solution didn't get it so let's make sure windows is still there. Download and burn a copy of Linux, Ubuntu or Mint are easiest for you to use and burn them to a dvd.

Boot from your new dvd and use the Live option. This will boot a live copy of linux and you'll be able to see your windows drive and anything on it. You can now transfer everything important to a different location. Once that is done you could then reinstall windows or the linux that you've already got. Remember, XP is at it's end of life and will no longer be supported, now would be a good time to upgrade to Linux or one of those MS products.
Hi

You need to borrow a Windows XP CD (prefferably with Service pack 3)

boot up laptop from XP CD go to emergency command consul
(google for a faq on using it)
the type dir c:\ /p
look for
ntldr
(dated 3 August 2004) note lower case
if it does not exist you need to copy it to C:\
if it does exist look at c:\boot.ini
does it exist ?
is it corrupt ?

typical version of c:\boot.ini
---------------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Edition" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

-----------------------------------

from another web site

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "x."
[ This letter may be different on your computer if XP SP0 or SP1 but from SP2 boot CD is X:]

copy x:\i386\ntldr c:\

[copy x:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\] if required

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

alternative (1) find these files on another XP system
put on USB memory stick

find a live linux CD ISO on internet such as:-
gparted, emergency rescue CD , ubcd, Parted Magic etc
burn ISO to cd using ImgBurn
(most other software too difficult to find correct option to burn iso image intead of putting gparted-1234-x86.iso as a file on CD)

and boot up from linux cd and use file manager to copy missing files from usb memory stick to c:\

alternative (2)
remove hard drive from laptop put in usb tray and attach to another XP PC
run chkdsk on usb hard disk
then copy missing files from c:\ of XP PC to usb hard disk
return hard disk to laptop

Some laptop hard disks are easy to extract google for instructions

Nice tutorial Mike.

As to what happened. I've run across viruses that when you start a scan that will catch it it says "Mess with me i'm gonna mess with you" and proceeds to convince the virus scanner that essential startup files are infected and need to be erased. Remember, people who write these things have no morals, they get off on angering people. A look at what a virus scanner wants to erase before letting it is a good idea.

I've put the disc in and it keeps coming up with the same message I've adjusted the setting to CD/DVD Rom to be first on the list, but still nothing. I have a Windows XP disc and a Windows 7 disc. I'm at a lose with this. Have i lost everything off my computer or can computer tech guys save it?

Hi Cass87

If you can not get your PC to boot off the DVD drive you have my alternative (2) but probably you should get some help from some one with more experience.

It is unlikely you have lost your data but who knows what is wrong as it is an old computer from about 2009
