USB mouse works with new GB m/b in BIOS but not in WinXP

I tried installing a new Gigabyte motherboard (GA-H61M-S1) this morning, but ran into two problems.

1) I have two IDE-to-SATA converter cables, which I needed for my CD/DVD drive. Neither one worked. The BIOS says that that SATA slot is empty.

2) My USB mouse works in the BIOS, but not in WinXP. I don't get any kind of error message. The cursor simply stays put. I tried a second, new mouse with the same result. It works on a laptop.

Actually, I'm planning to install Win8.1, but I've got to go into XP to install it. (And I anticipate having to boot into XP here and there.)

Windows xp works fine in a UEFI BIOS. HOWEVER, I recommend that you enable Legacy emulation, That should eradicate any problems that the BIOS may be causing. But have you tried a PS/2 Mouse?

I'll try enabling Legacy emu. Will let you know tom'w.

Don't have a PS/2 mouse. As a matter of fact, I'm mourning the loss of my ability to continue using my serial mouse, which, believe it or not, I've been using for close to 10 years. (The SAME mouse!) I've really gotten used to it.

I know what you mean, I got this ONN $7 usb mouse from walmart, It is the most comfortable, responsive mouse I've ever had. And it's been going strong for 3 1/2 years!

Turns out Legacy Emulation was already enabled. Just as an experiment, I reinstalled my old m/b (which I had to do anyway, since my mouse problem with the new one isn't solved) and booted up Windows with the USB mouse. It worked fine. It's just with the new one that it refuses to respond in Windows.

Help!!!

If all else fails, maybe you could get a PS/2 mouse and try it like that. Windows XP sometimes has driver issues with newer mptherboards' USB bus controller. And if you can get a mouse, ANY mouse, working, you can look for and install driver updates.

I'll have to see if I can borrow one. Don't want to waste money if that's not the solution.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks.

Hi there

Does the mouse show up in Device manager?

When you initially plug it in does it work for a couple of seconds then stop?

It's plugged in before I turn on the computer. If I first go into the BIOS, it works fine. But when I boot into WinXP, it doesn't respond at all. Hence, I can't tell you whether it's listed in Device Manager.

It's an ASUS motherboard, Correct? Can you give me the product number? If you can find the driver page for your motherboard, there may be a generic mouse driver for windows XP. (My brother had the same problem, for him it was as easy as popping the cd into the drive and letting AutoRun do it's thing. It was an MSI board though)

Well, none the less, If it's a driver issue, I'll need the motherboard's model to help you. (My brother's is the MSI A55M-E33)

it should be showing as Hid compliant mouse in device manager. If it's showing as Hid compliant device you have an issue. I have come across this issue twice in the last monthe and the problem is a corrupt msmouse.pnf file. This file is located at c:Windows/inf

That's a hidden folder so you need to change folder options to unhide protected files.

You need to copy that file from a working xp profile and replace it on the non working one and unplug the mouse and plug back in.

This has resolved the issue for me both times.

But, How can he change folders if both of his mice don't work?

Two ways. Firstly copy from working xp machine or profile to flash drive and copy into problem profile or machine.

Secondly he stated he has another mobo that works. Switch and then copy from one to the other.

Apolgies if that wasn't what you were asking. If he cannot navigate to device manager through keyboard then my last post is the best option.

From my experience in the last month updating or reinstalling the drivers will not make a difference.

My apologies. I haven't logged into either this thread for a while or to the e-mail account which receives notifications of new posts, so I didn't realize you had a dialogue going here. I've replaced msmouse.pnf, but it will likely be a couple of weeks until I get the chance to swap the boards. I'll get back to you with the results when I've tried out your and some other suggestions.

Thank you very much for your help.

You should try one to see if PS/2 will work.

It took me much longer to get to this than I thought it would, but here's what happened. Replacing msmouse.pnf didn't help. Windows eventually found my new hardware and installed the USB mouse.

Thank you very much to all of you who took the time to write and offer suggestions.
