Random Internet Disconnects

My internet has started randomly disconnecting. A command prompt ping test gave me good numbers for about 3 minutes, then it randomly says "Request timed out" when I'm playing an online game for about 3-4 tries. Then the internet is fine again. This is after a router and modem reset and pc restart. Traceroute gave me good numbers. A ping of my wireless router has given me mostly 1's with a fair amount of >40ms pings. Please help :/

WiFi is a strange beast, it can show more problems than there actually is, and there are a lot more factors...

Have you checked with your ISP to see if there are any service outages? They may be carrying out upgrade work, or repairs in your area. Ask a local neighbour if they are having the same problem.

If it is only with your connection, then your ISP should be capable of finding out why. Give them a call.

I have Time Warner Cable - and in the Austin area, their DNS servers are the worst I have ever used....I would suggest changing your DNS to OpenDNS (https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/opendns-ip-addresses/) and/or Google DNS (https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/). This solved 99% of the problems I have with TWC....

Most ISPs put the money in getting high speed test results, and their DNS servers are overloaded - specifically during 4:00PM - 11:00PM in the weekday nights, and 9:00AM - 11:00PM on the weekends.

This is a great idea. If you notice that using a different DNS stops the inconsistency, then you can be sure that your ISP's DNS is poor. Its a bigger problem than people think.

If you are able to get onto your router, (Gateway IP address) Type it into your browser, and the username/pw should be on the router label.

Take down all your router details, and connect a different router, config it the same and see if that helps. But your ISP should be doing that for you.

I have a linksys router with dd-wrt installed. It's channel doesn't overlap with the other channels in the area, it's on "G" mode, and my laptop has QoS enabled on it. As far as the ping test goes, I have kinda new results, the ping is great when no internet is being used at all, however, when anything with relatively low bandwidth requirements is being used (for example: Netflix uses 4mbps out of my 15mbps) the ping is not consistent at all.

WiFi is a strange beast, it can show more problems than there actually is, and there are a lot more factors to consider.

If your LAN is working fine, and your WiFi is sporadic, then you should focus on on the WiFi, if your LAN is showing the same, then you have to go to the source, which is your ISP and their connection to your locale.
