This is my first pc build and i dont want to mess up. I have a Samsung 850 evo as my boot drive and a WD Blue as my storage drive. I am using an Asus Z170-A motherboard. I dont have an optical drive. Im downloading Windows 10 from a flash drive. Do i have to format my ssd before downloading windows 10? I need to know exactly how to download and setup my ssd as a boot drive and how to setup my hard drive as a storage drive.

I don't have an ASUS motherboard, so I don't know exactly how your options look like. Quick Google search says that, for an ASUS motherboard, hitting F8 (right after powering on your PC) should bring up a boot option. Select your boot device, in this case USB flash drive or whatever it's name is and the setup should start. This video should help.

Probably not beforehand. When you enter the setup you will be able to do that from there. Here is a link to help you with the steps. You can find everything you need to know about installing Windows 10 including the creation of the boot installation media (DVD/USB flash drive).

During the windows 10 install it will format your drive for you.

FYI, you cant just copy the file to a flash drive and it boot, you have to run it and tell it to create a bootable flash drive to install from.

Then you select usb drive in your quick boot menu on bios (consult manual if unsure), then your windows installer will run, then select your SSD drive and install windows to it.

Oh yeah, I suggest plugging out your storage drive before you begin doing anything. After you successfully install Windows, plug it back in. The reason is that some unexpected errors might occur because of the presence of multiple drives (SSD/HDD) and to make sure that Windows doesn't store any files on the secondary drive during installation.

If your question is about that boot menu, restart your PC and the first screen you see should have some text on it saying what button is used to enter the boot menu. Simply press it during that time and select your USB device. It should start the Windows Install Setup if you burned everything properly to it.

Ok so all I have to do is disconnect the HDD and start up the pc. Then i open the bios and select the usb. Windows should now download onto the ssd. Then i plug the HHD back in and im good.

Will windows know to use the HDD as the storage drive or will it download stuff onto the SSD unless i setup the hardrive in the bios?

You need to download Windows before you install it and you cannot do that in the boot menu. So, before doing anything, download the Windows and make a bootable USB device. Here is a link that will help you. The steps you mentioned are not wrong, but you have to download an operating system before doing that. SSD will be your primary (boot) drive since there is an operating system on it. After you plug in a HDD, it should be recognized and marked as a secondary storage device by default. If it's not recognized, then you will have to format it (which deletes everything on your HDD, but since this is a new build, there shouldn't be any files on it anyway...).

But let's take it step by step. Follow the instructions in that link above and you should be fine.

Looks like I was wrong here as I assumed that you would be downloading Windows 10 and making a bootable device yourself. Now, if you bought a Windows 10 package thingy and an USB flash drive came with it, then fine. Most of the job is already done then. Skip those parts about downloading and get straight to installation.
