Hi,
I'm living in a rural area where I get around 5mbps which is just not sufficient and fibre doesn't look like it's coming in the near future.

I was wondering how having two lines to the same house would work? I know I can do it but how could you manage the traffic?

would the two separate lines come through two separate modems? Is there any way of merging them or would I be forced to have two separate routers? Could you use a switch effectively?

Solution
Not much really. You may have a unit that needs 2 modems, you may have one that has 2 (or more) built in. It all comes down to the same thing of being a load-balancing (2x5) rather than joining (1x10) setup.
UK information - I own a small ISP

Cisco and Dynamode offer dual-modem routers which you can use for load balancing. This would give you 2x5Mb connections rather than 1x10, so if you are the only person using the connection, you won't see a bundle of difference. You could also use a Smoothwall or IPFire box for load balancing duties.

Many suppliers offer a true 'bonded' setup which joins the lines at the exchange and provides you with a true 1x10Mb connection. This can be expensive (the ones we sell on cost us £50 - £80pcm), but will work with up to four lines.
