I can't find anything about this anywhere, so I figured I would ask.

I have a crucial mx100 512GB SSD that I have been using for over a year. It has never given me any trouble and has worked perfectly. The only thing is, I just realized that I never connected the power cable to it from my PSU. That's right, it's been getting all its power through the SATA data cable. I didn't know this was possible. The only thing that I did notice was my bios did not recognize the drive, but windows still booted and ran perfectly. Can anyone tell me how this was possible and if I have done any damage to my system from drawing the power from the data cable? I have since connected the proper sata power connector and all seems well, aside from the fact that my screen turns on and off a few times now when I reboot. Just plain weird!

I know that's why it's so crazy that it has been working this long. As far as I can tell it should never have booted up at all without power connected. There is obviously some power coming over the data cable for some reason. Could this be due to a design flaw of the mainboard or something? It's a MSI z87-g41 pc mate. My main concern is that I didn't mess my drive or any other components up by running it this way. Everything is acting fine. Stress tested for a while and passed Prime95, also crystaldisk is reporting good numbers.

I know you want an answer but posting on an 7 year old thread isn't going to get you an answer as the person who asked isn't going to get any notice you asked a question - mainly as we have swapped forum software since they asked.

I didn't mean for you to answer here :)

closing thread.
