Simple question: 16gb ram vs 12gb ram vs Stick count

So I have a weird situation right now,
my pc currently has 6 sticks of 2gb ram (Total 12gb) and apparently I heard having a lot of ram sticks is good because of multithreading?
Anyways I recently got 2 ram sticks of 8gb each (Total 16gb) and I was thinking about replacing my 12 for the 16 but I don't know if it is more beneficial to have more ram or a greater amount of sticks and less ram.

Option 1:
12gb 6 sticks

Option 2:
16gb 2 sticks

I don't know if I should add any more details about my pc specs because the question is pretty generic, but let me know if you need any.

Thank you!

The motherboard and CPU make a difference. Most desktop CPUs are dual channel memory contollers. But if your motherboard can have six DIMMs, it is most likely that your CPU is triple channel. But, you may be able to have a faster memory clock with two sticks. Difficult to say without benchmarking.
