How long will a I7 7700k last?

So ive been using a I5 7600 with my GTX 1060 6GB for a few months now (i bought the rig back in August) and this is more of a question to put my mind at ease. Im going to upgrade to an i7 7700k within the new few months. And i was wondering how long is this CPU going to last before it becomes like my current i5 and restraining what i can do on my PC (multitasking wise)

Solution

Honestly you can probably live off an i7 7700K then. Overwatch likes to use 4 cores, more if possible, but a browser...
How long it lasts depends on what you expect out of it, and in what things. Multitasking is a wide term - it could mean you open 40 Chrome tabs simultaneously or play a game while doing an Excel sheet. Be a bit more specific.

In games(since you have a GTX 1060) an i7 7700K is still pretty good, but if games become more multi-threaded in the future(which they are expected to become, especially with Coffee Lake out), the i7 7700K might not last very long, since it is only a 4 core chip.

For workstation uses, more cores usually equals more performance(not always, though).

An i7 7700K can still do multitasking very well, but again, it depends on what yours tasks are.

my tasks are just small things such as having a game open but have a stream and a few tabs open on chrome. With my current CPU and 8GB RAM i cant do this without major frame drops as my cpu usage is always at 99%

Then it comes down to what game it is. Most games still use 4 cores easily, and I don't think the remaining 4 threads(if we just assume to be weaker cores) would be enough to run a stream and a few tabs together. You need a hexa core processor at least, especially for games that use a lot of processing power. If you're running CS GO or Fortnite, you can run off the 7700K just fine.

Edit: You'll also need 16 gigs of RAM, since most games eat up the 8 gigs of RAM pretty easily.

well the main game im playing at the minute is Overwatch? and i am getting 16GB RAM im upgradng my CPU my RAM and installing a SSD

Honestly you can probably live off an i7 7700K then. Overwatch likes to use 4 cores, more if possible, but a browser tab or two, even with live streams, can run in the background without much hindrance to performance. One of the most major factors in this recommendation is that to upgrade beyond the 7700K, to a hexa core processor, you'll need to upgrade the motherboard too, which becomes a little too much.

As for how long the processor will last, it depends on how fast games start using six cores easily, and how long it takes for you to start playing these games.

yeah i dont understand the issue with my motherboard, i have a Asus strix B250H GAMING: ATX, LGA1151 and the company ill be having the upgrades done by only say im allowed either an i5 7600, i5 7600k, i7 7700 and the i7 7700k there the only cpus that are available to me? i dont know if you know a thing or two about motherboards and know why that is?

Well there's also the sixth generation processors - those will also work, but they're pretty much a downgrade. Other than the processors you've mentioned, no other processors will work in your motherboard. In fact, an i7 7700K wouldn't be overclockable in your motherboard, so keep in mind you'll only be able to run it at stock clock speeds. To overclock it you need a Z270 board, and I would NOT recommend buying a Z270 anymore, since it's immensely outdated now, and a Z370 board with an 8th gen processor would make much more sense.

So, yes, those are the only chips you can use with your motherboard. The company who'll upgrade for you is right. This is mainly because Intel is being a d**k about motherboard chipset compatibility, so a Z270 board does not support 8th gen processors.

well the company wont upgrade motherboards.. so i guess im going to have to just go with the i7 7700k and stick with it and hope its what i need

I’m not sure you’re going to gain much going to a 7700k with the tasks you listed. I think going to 16gb with an SSD will make all the difference you need.

I was running a much older 3570k for years with 16gb and an ssd and never had any slowdowns switching tabs and from a game to a browser.

I’d suggest trying the other upgrades first then getting a 7700k if problem’s not solved. You’ll need to buy a good cpu cooler as well (if you’re using stock).

Also wouldn’t pay a shop to do the first part - ram and ssd swap is easy. Just a thought.

i 100% need to change my cpu its pretty much always 99% usage whenever im in a game, for my cpu cooler i already have CoolerMaster Hyper 212X (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler.

i would do the upgrades myself but for the hassle of £50 i would rather not deal with the cpu cooler because its mounted with everything around it and the bracket on the other end.

For my RAM i would do that myself no problem, but ive heard people have issues with RAM not packaged together, so if the company picks up on an issue theyll fix it because i am on warranty.

The SSD i would do but i dont have the patience for cable management, and its all nice and tidey so i wouldnt want to ruin it haha.

Ok then! I hope you get what you are after. I just upgraded to my sig from that 3570k with a sata3 ssd and it’s just not that impresive for the $1200 I spent. Unless your system is misconfigured in some way, the 7600 is a highly capable cpu.

I’d run a Valley or Superposition benchmark and save the results, then run it again afterwards to see what the gain was.

Happy gaming!

i dont understand the superposition benchmark test at all, ive saved the results but i got like 8100 and when ive compared people with gtx titan xp and an intel i9 processor have less score than mine? and thanks dude i hope its what im looking for ive spent enough on this pc already

Hello, I have a gtx1060 6gb and updated to i7700. I can ensure that 16gb ram makes diffference in Battlefield 1 and Forza 7. Remember that i7700 have hypertreading technologic that jumps to more four logical cores. I believe this professor can run more some years.
