I am looking for a cpu which can be used for gaming, machine learning algorithms, 3d modelling and rendering. Both sets come at around the same cost, so what should I go for?

The Ryzen 5 2600 is easily better in singe-threaded applications. I can't recommend the 1700 when the 2700 is out. If you actually need the cores, buy the 2700. The 2nd gen is notably better at gaming.
