Is my External Hard Drive corrupted?

Hello, how is everyone?
I had a question. I have an external hard drive with nothing but photos on it. Of my kids/family/nature. Well, I think it's going corrupted. I've been seeing empty folders and black photos. What should I do? Is there any way to help fix this and restore lost photos? Are they gone for good? Is there any way to make sure the external doesn't go anymore corrupted? I was literally in tears. I mean I know they're photos. But I have a memory problem so I need the photos. Please help me. I really don't know what to do.
Also, is there a certain spot that I should have my hard drive stored to make it last longer?
Do I need to leave it plugged in for a while?
And is it possible there are bugs/malware on it (whatever you call it), how would I like clean the hard drive without deleting/or losing anything?

Solution
One thing at a time.
Copy first, and verify what got copied.

Then maybe we can run some diagnostics on that drive.
I'm not going to suggest how or with what, until you at least attempt to copy that data. We don't want you to get ahead of the process.

You mean copy them on the computer?
Also, how do I diagnose the external hard drive?

Yes, copy that data off to some other drive...anywhere. If you still can.

You have 2 things to worry about.
1. The data. Your family photos. This was the only location for those pics? Not existing on any other drive?
Irreplaceable.

2. The physical drive. Maybe fixable, but if not, easily replaced.

You need to take care of #1 first.

Okay, so after I copy the photos to my computer. Do I do a diagnose the external on the same computer? Or should I do it on a different one? Where do I go in the settings to diagnose the external? I hope those questions made sense. Also I only have a laptop. Not sure if that makes a difference?
