I have a super old i5-3570 and I think I might just make the jump to ryzen since I need a new mobo anyway. I haven't been keeping up at all just generally whats the best amd processor for gaming without overclocking?

Still not sure if I should go for Ryzen or i7 though.

Worth taking a look at the i5-8400 if purely for gaming and no overclocking..Also the first gen Ryzen have dropped dramatically in price, especially the 1700 which is a steal at the moment..
For straight gaming ? Without overclocking ?

Yes it's better , 4.2/4.3 ghz boost clocks on an x470 board vs 3.8/3.9 on the 2700.

Core count means nothing , 6c/12t on the Ryzen 6 cores is barely utilised now.
Bf1 multiplayer can use 8 threads at most , 80% of games top out at 4 threads , the rest may use 5 or 6 at best.

"Bf1 multiplayer can use 8 threads at most"

Pretty sure BF1 is scaling pretty well with up to at least 12 threads...
